Letter to The Star: File Sharing Website Block
Hello,
I am an IT officer of a local bank for almost 5 years now, and I am compelled to write about the recent orders by SKMM to block a number of file sharing websites.
File sharing websites has been there for ages. It’s started to gain momentum these last few years due to improvements of internet connections throughout the world. These websites are meant for people to share their work and personal files. And recently it’s been infected with piracy contents.
Blocking File Sharing websites will also blocks many other contents, such as game mods. Here is a 'custom world' for The Sims 3, which was often hosted at File Sharing websites.
However, file sharing sites are not just used for sharing illegal contents. Some used it to upload custom firmwares, some used it to upload game mods, while some used it to submit assignments when the file is too large. Some shares personal private videos between family members, some used it to bulk upload tonnes of images in single zip files and many other convenient usage.
What is next? Blocking Youtube since people are sharing Maharaja Lawak and Akademi Fantasia clips? Are we slowly becoming “The Great Firewall of China”?
Each of the file sharing sites have their own policies regarding uploads, and most of them forbade privacy contents. It’s up to THEM to block those contents. It is not our government’s job however, to limit our ability to share.
By blocking these sites, they are blocking our ways to share our works, our creations, our creativity. Not to mention it basically conflicts with MSC Bill of Guarantees number 5, which was “To ensure there are no censorship of the internet”.

So, last weekend there was a BIG cosplay event in Malaysia at Tropicana Mall, PJ.
It was C2AGE. C2AGE is considered amongst big dogs in cosplay scene here.

Tidying up!
